ALL ACADEMICS
I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Terry Jernigan as Director of the Center for Human Development, an Organized Research Unit at UCSD, effective July 1, 2008. Terry Jernigan has been a member of the Health Sciences faculty since 1984, as Professor In Residence of Psychiatry and Radiology, and she now joins the faculty of the department of Cognitive Science as Professor. Professor Jernigan has been conducting human brain research using neuroimaging techniques since the late 1970's, and her work has encompassed both basic cognitive neuroscience and clinical neuroscience. She has investigated normal brain development and aging, as well as neurodevelopmental disorders in children, neuropsychiatric disorders in young adults, and neurodegenerative disorders of aging. Much of her recent work, which focuses on the extended course of brain maturation in children, examines the effects of genetic factors and experience, as well as exposure to drugs and alcohol on the developing brain, and relates these factors to cognitive and behavioral development. She will bring this work to the CHD where she will join other CHD investigators in new research initiatives to explore the origins of individual differences in behavioral characteristics. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Joan Stiles for her years of service as CHD's founding director. During her tenure, the Center has achieved national and international prominence. Please join me in welcoming Professor Jernigan as the next Director of the Center for Human Development.
