SUBJECT:    Associate Vice Chancellor - Research Facilities

I am pleased to announce that Nicholas Webster has been appointed to the position of Associate Vice Chancellor - Research Facilities, effective July 1, 2008. Dr. Webster will join the Office of Research Affairs, assisting me in developing and implementing a strategic vision for UCSD core research facilities and services, including those involving animals, to enhance the overall campus research infrastructure.

Dr. Webster has been a member of the Department of Medicine since 1989. He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1986 and then performed post-doctoral research at the CNRS in Strasbourg, France before joining UCSD. Dr. Webster's research focuses on i) the mechanism of hypothalamic regulation of pituitary function, ii) the regulation of alternative RNA splicing, and iii) the development of neuroprotective drugs.

Dr. Webster is a member of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center, the UCSD/UCLA Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center, the Biomedical Science Graduate Program, and he has a joint appointment with the VA Hospital and the Veterans Medical Research Foundation. At UCSD, Dr. Webster has served on many committees including the Radiation Safety and Surveillance Committee, the Recruiting and Admission Committees for the School of Medicine, the MSTP Program and the BMS Program. At the VA, Dr. Webster serves on the Research and Development Committee and has served as Chair of the Research Space Committee. He also directs a core facility, which is jointly funded by the VA/VMRF and the Cancer Center and provides genomic microarray services to researchers.

I hope you will join me in congratulating Nick on his new position.
