SUBJECT:    Establishment of the Institute of Engineering in
Medicine (IEM) as an Organized Research Unit

Following consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrative officials, I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Institute of Engineering in Medicine (IEM) as an Organized Research Unit reporting to Vice Chancellor Art Ellis. Shu Chien, Distinguished University Professor of the departments of Bioengineering and Medicine, will serve as founding Director. Drs. David Cheresh (Professor of Pathology, Moores Cancer Center) and Shankar Subramaniam (Professor and Chair of Bioengineering) have agreed to serve as Associate Directors.

The Institute will bring together faculty from diverse disciplinary areas of the campus including the Jacobs School of Engineering (JSOE), the School of Medicine (SOM), and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS) and will focus on applying engineering principles and techniques to medicine for the enhancement of human health and quality of life.

Research in the Institute will concentrate primarily on the development of new and unique approaches to healthcare, including human phenotyping, biomarker identification, and clinical testing/monitoring, as well as the discovery and validation of biopharmaceuticals and therapeutics, and facilitation of human clinical, field, and translational studies.

Membership in the IEM is open to all faculty members and research scientists/scholars. Information is available on the IEM website (http://iem.ucsd.edu). Interested parties are invited and encouraged to contact Professor Chien (shuchien@ucsd.edu) directly with a copy to his assistant, Rowella Garcia (rgarcia@bioeng.ucsd.edu).
