SUBJECT:    Search for the Executive Director of International Affairs

A national search for the Executive Director of International Affairs is now commencing, and I am pleased to invite applications and nominations for this position (http://internationalaffairs.ucsd.edu).

The Office of International Affairs is responsible for promoting UCSD’s global leadership in research, education and public service through forging partnerships and projects around the world and by fostering selective reinvention of UCSD’s policies, procedures and capabilities to respond more adroitly to the globalization of leading education and research activities.

The Executive Director reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor of International Affairs (AVC-IA), and works in tandem with the AVC-IA on the articulation of a long-term vision and plan in support of the continued development of UCSD’s international mission. The Executive Director works with faculty, and department and central administrators, to coordinate the development of campus-wide international initiatives and activities, and provides strategic process planning, and development and reform of campus and system-wide international policies and procedures. The Executive Director serves as a point of contact for UCSD’s multi-unit international projects and initiatives, and facilitates communication, collaboration and consensus-building UC-wide and across the campus. The Director also secures outside funding, oversees the Office of International Affairs, and provides supervision to its staff.

Successful candidates are proven leaders with demonstrated experience in international affairs in universities, government agencies/programs, research institutions, and/or the private sector, and in international program and policy development and managing international relationships. Position requirements include leadership, strategic planning, negotiation, fund raising and supervisory skills. An advanced degree or equivalent experience is required.(e.g., Ph.D., JD). The salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The membership of the search committee is given below. All candidate materials will be sent to me as Chair-in care of Cheryl Ott.

Candidates are encouraged to submit their application materials by October 20, 2008, for full consideration. The search committee will continue reviewing candidate files until the position is filled. Nominations and applications (curriculum vitae, an optional statement of interest, e-mail address, and names of references) should be submitted electronically (Microsoft Word files preferred), in confidence, to:
