Subject:    Chief Health Sciences Marketing and Communications Officer

I am pleased to announce that DeAnn Marshall has been selected for the new position of Chief Health Sciences Marketing and Communications Officer, a position developed to oversee our combined communications, marketing, and public affairs efforts encompassing the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and UC San Diego Medical Center.

This integrated unit will result in more effective utilization of our marketing and communications resources to promote our enterprise, and achieve greater results in our messaging, communications, and outreach efforts, in collaboration with campuswide marketing and communication activities.

Ms. Marshall has an exceptional background of successful leadership in all of these areas. She most recently served as Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer for the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation, providing executive leadership, strategic planning, and operational direction for the Foundation. Prior to holding this position, she was Vice President of Public and Government Affairs for the 235-bed pediatric academic medical center, directing comprehensive internal and external communications, advertising, marketing, media relations, and government affairs.

She has also worked for the public relations agencies Burson-Marsteller and Ketchum Communications, and served as a senior media specialist for Allegheny General Hospital. She was named Communicator of the Year in 2003 by the Public Relations Society of America, and received the Touchstone Award from the American Hospital Association, among her many professional honors.

This is an exciting time for UC San Diego Health Sciences as we work together to fully realize our vision of “Clinical Excellence…Through Service, Innovation, and Education.” We are focusing on programmatic growth and expansion, and facility expansion as we near completion of the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center and plan for additional clinical, research, and education buildings to come online over the next few years. We are also committed to advancing our reputation as a top-tier academic medical center serving the San Diego region and beyond. We look forward to building on the momentum of recent years to achieve even greater success and recognition for the important contributions of UC San Diego Health Sciences under Ms. Marshall’s leadership. Please join me in welcoming DeAnn Marshall to our team.
