SUBJECT:	14th Annual Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk for
	Scholars 2009

I am proud to once again lead the annual Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars on Friday, October 23, 2009, and I invite you to participate in this activity to support undergraduate student scholarships. In these difficult economic times, and with the recent rise in the cost of higher education, our students are in need of scholarship support now more than ever. Since its founding in 1996, the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K has raised more than $2.12 million in scholarship funding to help more than 800 promising students attend UC San Diego.

Day of race check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. The Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk will start at 12:15 p.m. from the North Campus Field, adjacent to RIMAC, and continue on a scenic course through campus. If you are not inclined to run or walk, but would like to be a part of this annual campus event, volunteers are needed. Please send an email to pvansise@ucsd.edu to sign up as a volunteer.

In the spirit of broad campus involvement in the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars, I am approving two hours of administrative leave with pay on the day of the event. Supervisors may allow staff to participate as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
