SUBJECT:    Status of Collective Bargaining for Postdocs

I am writing to inform you of the status of collective bargaining for a contract for UC postdoctoral scholars.

As many of you are aware, the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW), was recognized as the exclusive representative of postdoctoral scholars in November, 2008. Individuals in the following titles are in the Postdoctoral Scholar bargaining unit (coded as the PX unit):

Postdoctoral Scholar - Employee (Title Code 3252)
Postdoctoral Scholar - Fellow (Title Code 3253)
Postdoctoral Scholar - Paid Direct (Title Code 3254)
Postgraduate Researcher - FY (Title Code 3240)
Postgraduate Researcher - AY State Funds (Title Code 3243)
Postgraduate Researcher - AY Extramural Funds (Title Code 3245)
Visiting _________ - Postdoc (Title Code 3370)

The UAW and the University are now embarking on the collective bargaining process that will result in a labor agreement covering postdoctoral scholar terms and conditions of employment.
This collective bargaining process formally began Monday, January 12, 2009, when the UAW and UC exchanged preliminary bargaining proposals.
The parties also placed notices in various newspapers announcing the commencement of negotiations and specifying the location where interested parties can view both initial proposals.
The UAW and the University will commence active negotiations on February 5 and 6, 2009. During this first session, each party will share details about their proposals. The UAW and UC will also discuss ground rules for negotiations and will establish a schedule for the first few months of negotiations.
While both the University and the UAW are committed to concluding negotiations as quickly as possible, the timeline for negotiations is not known.
The University has established a public web site that will provide collective bargaining information to all interested parties. Please feel free to access this information at:
