SUBJECT:    NIH Limited Submissions for ARRA Construction, Repair,and Renovation Funding

The following NIH opportunities limit the number of applications that may go forward from the campus. To be eligible to apply, please submit Letters of Intent (LOIs), containing a short description of the proposed project, to the Office of Research Affairs by April 1, 2009 (PAR-RR-09-008) and/or June 1 (PAR-RR-09-007), depending on which of the programs are of interest. The LOIs may be sent to Nick Webster (njwebster@ucsd.edu) or George Tynan (gtynan@ucsd.edu). In consultation with the Vice Chancellors, the campus will select the successful proposals for this limited submission opportunity.

PAR-RR-09-008: Major alterations and renovations, or new construction (C06) (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-09-008.html)

This FOA is intended to facilitate and enhance the conduct of Public Health Service-supported biomedical and behavioral research by supporting the costs of improving non-Federal basic research, clinical research, and animal facilities to meet the biomedical or behavioral research, research training, or research support needs of an institution.

Funds requested may range from $2M to $15M for a period not to exceed five years. Due dates are in accordance with the amount requested. An institution may submit no more than three distinct applications under this FOA. An institution is not limited, however, to one submission per application date.

Internal Letter of Intent deadline: April 1, 2009
Final application due date(s): May 6, 2009 (projects between $2M and $5M);
June 17, 2009 (projects between $10M and $15M);
July 17, 2009 (projects between $5M and $10M).

PAR-RR-09-007: Renovations or repairs to core facilities (G20) (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-09-007.html).

For the purpose of this FOA, a core facility is defined as a centralized shared resource that provides access to instruments or technologies or services, as well as expert consultation to investigators supported by the core. The major objective of this FOA is to upgrade core facilities to support the conduct of PHS-supported biomedical and/or behavioral research. Support can be requested to alter and renovate (A&R) the core facility as well as to improve the general equipment in the core facility or to purchase general equipment for specialized groups of researchers. Specialized equipment over $100,000 in cost cannot be requested as part of this FOA. In situations when similar core facilities exist in different departments at an institution, funding can be requested in support of centralizing these core facilities.

Funds requested may range from $1M to $10M. The budget may include a request for general purpose equipment, for alteration and renovation funds, or both. The total project period for an award made in response to this FOA may not exceed five years. An institution may submit no more than two applications under this FOA.

Internal Letter of Intent deadline: June 1, 2009
Final application due date: September 17th, 2009.
