SUBJECT:    Associate Vice Chancellor - Research Initiatives

I am pleased to announce that Paul Yu has been appointed to the position of Associate Vice Chancellor - Research Initiatives, effective April 1, 2009. Professor Yu will join the Office of Research Affairs, assisting me in developing and implementing a strategic vision for UCSD research initiatives, including new programs to support large interdisciplinary projects, advance technology transfer, and expand undergraduate research at UCSD.

Professor Yu first joined UCSD as an Assistant Professor in 1983, becoming full Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1993, where he has since served as both Vice Chair and Chair of the department. Professor Yu currently holds the position of inaugural Equity Advisor in the Jacobs School of Engineering, promoting the diversity of faculty and students. Professor Yu's research investigates optoelectronic devices and materials for energy and communications research, microwave photonics, and nanoscale devices and systems, including nanowires and quantum wells for photovoltaic and electro-optic applications.

Professor Yu's UCSD faculty experience and his strong interest in expanding opportunities for research will be a great asset to our campus.

Please join me in congratulating Paul Yu on his new position.
