ACADEMIC AFFAIRS July 30, 2009
ACADEMIC SENATE MEMBERS
It is with great pleasure that I announce the recent appointment of Dr. Sharon Rose, Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics, as the Faculty Director of the UC San Diego Programs Abroad Office, effective July 1, 2009. Professor Rose, who received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from McGill University in Montreal, joined the Linguistics Department in 1996. She was the recipient of a UC San Diego Hellman Fellowship in 2001 and a UCSD Faculty Career Development Award in 1999. Currently serving as the department's Undergraduate Advisor, Professor Rose recently launched the first undergraduate Linguistics Club in one of her many efforts to provide a quality education experience for students. Professor Rose's research and teaching are international in focus; she conducts research on African languages from the Horn of Africa region, including Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan, and has spent many months in Ethiopia, working with speakers of languages from this area. She is an affiliated faculty member with the International Studies program and the African and African-American Studies Research Project. On the community level, Dr. Rose is actively involved with the Sudanese community through volunteer tutoring and grant writing for the Southern Sudanese Community Center. Director Rose joins the Associate Faculty Director of the Programs Abroad Office, Dr. Paula Levin, Senior Lecturer SOE and Graduate Advisor in Education Studies, in promoting the academic integration of study abroad course work into the departmental and college programs. The faculty directors play a central role in UC San Diego's international programs, which include the Education Abroad Program (EAP), the Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP), and UC San Diego Faculty-led Global Seminars. Please join me in congratulating Professor Rose on her appointment.
