SUBJECT:    Passing of Professor Emeritus Andrew Wright

Today we learned of the passing of our colleague and friend, Andrew Wright, Ph.D., FRSL, Professor Emeritus of English Literature (UCSD Literature Department 1963-1991). Many of us knew Andy and we are saddened by the loss of an important person in the history of the Department of Literature.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Andy graduated from Harvard College, majoring in English and earned advanced degrees at Ohio State University. He authored Jane Austen's Novels: A Study in Structure (1953), Joyce Cary: A Preface to His Novels (1958), Henry Fielding: Mask and Feast (1965, Blake's 'Job': A Commentary (1972), Anthony Trollope: Dream and Art (1983), and Fictional Discourse and Historical Space; Defoe and Theroux, Austen and Forster, Conrad and Greene (1987).

Andy was a reviewer for the London "Times Literary Supplement" and other scholarly journals. He served on editorial boards, compiled the well-known Selective Bibliography for the Study of English and American Literature (with Richard D. Altick; 1979) and A Reader's Guide to English & American Literature (1972), and was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship and Fulbright Fellowship twice each. Andy was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom, and an honorary member of the Phi Beta Kappa.

The Department of Literature will hold a memorial service in Andy's honor. Please contact Nancy Daly (ndaly@ucsd.edu) if you would like to be invited. Please join us as we send our heartfelt condolences to Andy's wife, Gina, and his family and friends.
