SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT UPDATE - NOAA La Jolla Lab Replacement
(Scripps Institution of Oceanography Neighborhood)

Project Description/Location

The NOAA La Jolla Laboratory Replacement Project will construct an approximately 124,000 gross square foot facility in addition to under-structure parking for 202 vehicles. The replacement facility will house a staff of approximately 300 currently housed at NOAA's existing Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) La Jolla Shores and Torrey Pines Court Facilities. The new facility will consist of laboratory, office and support spaces. The project is located in the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Neighborhood bordering La Jolla Shores Drive and Shellback Way (adjacent to Parking Lot P014).

Immediate Impacts

On or shortly after October 15, 2009 and continuing until October 2011 vehicular traffic around the site and on adjacent streets will be impacted at times to accommodate construction activities and utility installations. Site excavation and haul trucks will likely slow traffic proceeding uphill on La Jolla Shores Drive from the project site beginning in mid-October 2009 - March 2010. There will be occasions when La Jolla Shores Drive will be reduced to one traffic lane. Pedestrian sidewalks directly adjacent to the project site will likely be impacted. Flagmen will direct traffic and pedestrians when necessary due to limited accessibility. Additional alerts will be issued throughout the construction period as needed.
