I invite you to join me at 11 a.m. October 9, 2009, in Mandeville Auditorium for a memorial tribute to honor Herb York, Chancellor Emeritus, UC San Diego; Director Emeritus, IGCC, and Professor Emeritus of Physics. Dr. York was founding chancellor of UC San Diego and a world-renowned physicist who helped develop the atomic bomb as a young researcher and later championed arms control. He died May 19, 2009. He excelled as scholar, researcher and diplomat, and leaves an enduring legacy as a UC San Diego professor and administrator, an innovative scientist dealing with issues of national urgency, and an ambassador for peace, stability and civility in the international scene. Dr. York was a mentor to students and advisor to U.S. presidents, intertwining academic and world advisor roles in a career that spanned more than 60 years. He served as founding chancellor of UC San Diego from 1961-1964, and returned as acting chancellor from 1970-1972.
