SUBJECT:    Pilot Project – Smoke-Free Health Sciences Campuses

The UC San Diego Smoke Free Policy (PPM 270-7) currently prohibits smoking in any indoor area, or within 25 feet of a doorway, entryway, operable window or ventilation intake duct to any facility. As the 2009 academic year begins, the Health Sciences division is initiating a 12-month pilot project establishing the Health Sciences academic and Medical Center campuses as entirely smoke-free. These areas encompass:

· The “Health Sciences Academic Campus” (all buildings and grounds including clinical, research and educational facilities of the School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences bordered by Gilman Drive, La Jolla Village Drive, and Villa La Jolla Drive), and

· The “UC San Diego Medical Center” campuses in Hillcrest and La Jolla (all buildings and grounds including clinical, research and educational facilities under the jurisdiction of the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences). The hospital and ambulatory care buildings and the grounds surrounding the clinical facilities are already smoke-free, except for designated smoking areas.

The Health Sciences Smoke Free Campus pilot project was initiated by a petition signed by more than 500 medical, pharmacy and graduate students who work on the campus. The pilot project has been endorsed by the Health Sciences Faculty Council. On the Health Sciences academic campus, smoking will be allowed in clearly designated, temporary smoking areas for six months after the pilot is initiated. The Health Sciences academic campus pilot project is expected to begin by the end of September. Plans for the Medical Center campuses to become entirely smoke-free are being finalized, and will be announced in the coming months.
