ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    UC San Diego’s 50th Anniversary Founders’ Day Celebration

To honor UC San Diego’s 50th anniversary and founding, you are invited to a very special Founders’ Day celebration in the campus Town Square on November 18 to commemorate the date in 1960 when the university was established. We will mark our golden anniversary by honoring our history and traditions and recognizing our extraordinary achievements through a multi-media celebration that features UC San Diego faculty, students, staff and alumni.

The event will include entertainment and free food beginning at 2:30 p.m. The official gathering and opening ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. and will honor founding faculty and alumni who will visually reflect the evolution of the university. A formal program will follow at 3:30 p.m. with special performances by the UCSD Tritones, students from our highly ranked Theatre and Dance Department, and a choir ensemble. For more information on the program, visit http://50th.ucsd.edu/events/founders-day.php

The Founders’ Day ceremonies in Town Square are free and open to the public. In addition, free prizes will be awarded, but you must preregister to be included in the drawings. To preregister, click on the UCSD Box Office link that is listed under the heading “Prizes” at the bottom of the http://50th.ucsd.edu/events/founders-day.php webpage. The link will take you to the UCSD Box Office where you may complete the registration by clicking the “Events” tab and selecting the Founders’ Day event to guide you through the preregistration process.

In order to allow employees the opportunity to attend the Founders’ Day celebration, I am approving two hours of administrative leave with pay. Supervisors are asked to allow employees to attend, as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties and patient care. We’ve added extra shuttle services to campus from the UC San Diego Medical Center, Hillcrest and Scripps Institution of Oceanography on the afternoon of Founders’ Day.

Join us to celebrate 50 years of achieving the extraordinary, as we begin this new tradition of honoring our Founders’ Day. If you have any questions about the Founders’ Day celebration, call (858) 534-6386.
