ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT: Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars 2010

I am proud to once again lead the annual Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars on Friday, October 22, 2010, and I invite you to participate in this activity to support undergraduate student scholarships. This year’s Chancellor’s Challenge 5K will celebrate the university’s landmark 50th Anniversary and the outstanding students, faculty, staff and alumni who have achieved the extraordinary over the past five decades. As we celebrate the past, our sight is set firmly on the next half century and supporting future generations of students.

Since its founding in 1996, the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K has raised $2.3 million in scholarship funding to help more than 800 promising students attend UC San Diego.

Day of race check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. The Chancellor’s Challenge 5K will start at 12:15 p.m. from the North Campus Field, adjacent to RIMAC and continue on a scenic course through campus. Participants may run or walk the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K course. Please contact Dave Koch at (858) 822-5260 to discuss requests for alternative accessibility arrangements or accommodations.

Your participation in the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K directly benefits student scholarships and contributes to Invent the Future, UC San Diego’s $50 million student support campaign. To register, pay online, access payroll deduction to support scholarships and for more information about this exciting event, please visit: www.ucsd.edu/5k. Participants will be provided with a special 50th Anniversary Chancellor’s Challenge 5K T-shirt at the event. Attendees are also encouraged to don vintage UC San Diego apparel from the last 50 years.

If you would like to volunteer at the event, please send an email to Pati VanSise at pvansise@ucsd.edu. Your time as a volunteer can be counted toward Volunteer50: The Chancellor’s Call to Service. For more information, please visit: www.volunteer50.ucsd.edu.

In the spirit of broad campus involvement in the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars, I am approving two hours of administrative leave with pay on the day of the event. Supervisors may allow two hours of release time for staff to participate as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.

We appreciate your ongoing support for our students. I look forward to seeing you on October 22 – rain or shine.
