SUBJECT:    UC San Diego Health System Expansion

We are delighted to announce the largest gift ever given to UC San Diego Health Sciences, a pledge of $75 million from Joan and Irwin Jacobs and family. This generous and visionary gift will allow the UC San Diego Health System to build Jacobs Medical Center, a 10-story, 490,000-square-foot facility adjacent to Thornton hospital on our East Campus.

Jacobs Medical Center will be home to approximately 245 patient beds and three new hospitals: the Cancer Hospital, the Hospital for Women and Infants, and the Hospital for Advanced Surgery. Construction should begin by early 2012, with the facility scheduled to be completed by June 2016 and open for patient care in December 2016. No funds from the State budget will be used in its construction.

The Jacobs gift, and the Medical Center it helps to build, will enable UC San Diego Health System to become one of the world’s premier destination academic medical centers, and to deliver expanded and much-needed specialty care to patients in San Diego and beyond. Physicians, scientists and engineers across the UC San Diego campus and the La Jolla Mesa will share in the discoveries and progress made possible by the Jacobs’ extraordinary vision.

Please join us in celebrating a day that will truly change the face of health care delivery in San Diego and beyond.
