SUBJECT:    April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April has been designated as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.

Because sexual assault is an issue that impacts our entire community, the UC San Diego Sexual Assault Resource Center and Women’s Center established the first UCSD Sexual Assault Awareness Month Planning Committee. The SAAM Committee has developed a month-long series of programs to raise awareness about sexual assault. To learn more about the programs and events this month, please visit: http://women.ucsd.edu/

Some of the main events include:

• April 21: National Wear Denim Day – UCSD community members are encouraged to wear denim as a visible sign in support of ending sexual assault

• April 29: Take Back The Night rally: speaker Jaclyn Friedman, co-editor of Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Power & A World Without Rape

In recognition of SAAM, one hour of administrative leave with pay has been approved that employees may apply to their attendance at a Sexual Assault Awareness Month event. Supervisors may allow one hour of administrative leave with pay for staff to participate during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, so long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.

Sexual violence impacts our entire community. We invite you to learn more about the effects of sexual violence, the resources available to address this issue, and our efforts to end sexual violence at UC San Diego. For more information, please visit http://sarc.ucsd.edu

Sexual Assault Awareness Month events are co-sponsored by a number of organizations and departments at UC San Diego including: the Sexual Assault Resource Center, Women’s Center, A.S. Women’s Commission, LGBT Resource Center, Cross-Cultural Center, Student Health Services, Student Health Advocates, Student Wellness, Voices of Planned Parenthood, Student Legal Services, Center for Student Involvement, Counseling and Psychological Services, Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women, UCSD Police Department, The Council of Coordinators of Student Activities.
