Stewardship Review of UC San Diego Chancellor Fox

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to inform you that you will soon be receiving a communication from Professor William Hodgkiss, Chair of the San Diego Division of the UC Academic Senate, inviting your participation in the five-year review process being conducted by the Academic Senate for Chancellor Fox. I would like to provide some brief background about this matter.

As President, each of the ten Chancellors reports to me. Since my appointment in 2008, I have instituted an annual evaluation process for each Chancellor. That process was completed satisfactorily and will be repeated again after the conclusion of the 2009-10 academic year. That process is confidential, of course.

In addition, the UC Academic Senate has a longstanding practice of conducting a five-year review of each Chancellor, on each fifth anniversary of the start date of the Chancellor's term. Consistent with the policy and procedures set forth by the Academic Council, this process is conducted entirely by the Academic Senate and does not involve any member of the administrative or executive staffs at either the campus or the Office of the President.

I ask that the UC Academic Senate commence the review, after I have conferred with the Chancellor whether he/she wishes to stand for review. The result of each five-year review is a report that is submitted to me on a confidential basis by the Chair of the Academic Council and the Chair of the Divisional Senate. I then meet separately with the Chancellor and with the Divisional Chair to review the report, which will be instructive to me as I conduct my own annual review with the Chancellor.

For 2009-10, I have asked the Chair of the Academic Council to initiate the five year review for Chancellor Fox. Chancellor Fox was appointed by the Board of Regents in 2004, so 2009 was the five-year milestone. As I mentioned, you will be hearing soon from Professor Hodgkiss, the Chair of the San Diego Division, who will invite you to contribute to the review process for Chancellor Fox.
