SUBJECT:    Cultural Sensitivity Is Key to Improving Campus Climate

UC San Diego students, staff and faculty are working to build a more welcoming campus climate that respects the diversity of our various cultures and communities. Even though in recent months we’ve collectively taken steps forward to improve our campus climate, it has been brought to our attention that a group of students wore Native American attire at the Sun God Festival, misappropriating meaningful cultural symbols. This behavior is insensitive and hurtful, and goes against all of our work to achieve a more inclusive campus climate.

It is inappropriate to disrespect any culture because it perpetuates stereotypes and denigrates the history and identity of cultural groups. It is the responsibility of everyone on our campus to confront these insensitive acts and uphold our Principles of Community.

We are committed to enriching our campus and we honor the special connection the university has with the Kumeyaay nation, making it imperative to address these issues. We must continue to work together to achieve our goal of improving the campus climate and diversity of the university.
