SUBJECT:    WASC Reaffirmation of Accreditation of UC San Diego

We are delighted to announce that the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) has reaffirmed the accreditation of UC San Diego for another 10 years.

WASC is the regional organization that provides umbrella accreditation for UC San Diego through its Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities. The campus is periodically reviewed to ensure that the educational standards as set forth by WASC continue to be met. Reaffirmation of accreditation is a multi-year, self-study process that formally engages the campus in institution-wide reflection on educational capacity and performance. It is a rigorous examination of how institutional resources, structures, and processes are aligned with scholastic outcomes. UC San Diego has been accredited by WASC since 1964.

We deeply appreciate the outstanding leadership of AVC Barbara Sawrey and former AVC Mark Appelbaum, as well as the involvement of so many students, staff, and faculty who participated in committees or activities that were part of our reaccreditation process. This was truly an all-campus effort. The Educational Effectiveness Review team was “impressed by the highly positive input received from faculty, students, staff, and administration about the character of UC San Diego, and the universal commitment to high quality education.”

UC San Diego’s accreditation website and the assembled data network were cited by reviewers “as an exemplar to other institutions.” The WASC reaffirmation of accreditation letter and all other accreditation materials are posted at http://accreditation.ucsd.edu. UC San Diego’s next WASC accreditation cycle will occur 2017-21. An interim report will be submitted to WASC in 2012 detailing progress on assessment of student learning and our academic program review.
