ACADEMIC SENATE: SAN DIEGO DIVISION
June 18, 2010
MEMBERS, SAN DIEGO DIVISION, ACADEMIC SENATE
SUBJECT: | 2010 Report of Senate Committee on Diversity and Equity |
Dear Colleagues:
Members of the University of California, San Diego Academic Senate
Committee on Diversity and Equity (CDE) have followed up on the racially
charged events of the 2010 winter quarter. The Committee gave an oral
presentation at the Representative Assembly meeting on May 25, 2010. The
presentation and written report can be found, respectively, at
http://senate.ucsd.edu/assembly/0910/CDE05-25-10.pdf and
http://senate.ucsd.edu/FrontPageDocs/CampusDiversity.pdf
The goal of this report is to inform the faculty on the state of
diversity and to highlight a need to enhance diversity and tolerance on
the UCSD campus. We share the concern of disparity of diversity from
California demographics. In particular, UCSD has the lowest percentages
of underrepresented minority students in the UC system. Other campuses
(e.g., Berkeley and Los Angeles) have launched significant endeavors to
increase diversity. It is imperative for us to actively promote
diversity and inclusion in order to ensure and advance the excellence of
our research and education.
We welcome and encourage input from the campus community in achieving
these goals. To convey such suggestions, please email senateCDE@ucsd.edu
