ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    World AIDS Day 2011 on December 1

UC San Diego will honor World AIDS Day on Thursday, December 1, 2011 as a special day to focus attention on the impact that HIV/AIDS has had in the San Diego community, the nation and the world. UC San Diego will display three sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in the Price Center East Ballroom from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. On display will be sections of the Quilt that have emerged from San Diego organizations and individuals as San Diegans have responded to the AIDS crisis, both in the early years of the epidemic and through present day. UC San Diego will sponsor a number of other events in recognition of World AIDS Day including a panel of staff living with HIV who will share their stories at 12:00p.m. in the Chancellor’s Complex 111a, a series of performances at the Quilt itself, as well as a photography exhibit of long term survivors with HIV/AIDS, and red ribbon distribution throughout campus.

In recognition of this event, I am approving one hour of administrative leave with pay that employees may apply to their attendance at a World AIDS Day event. Supervisors may allow one hour of administrative leave with pay for staff to participate during World AIDS Day, as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.

World AIDS Day events are co-sponsored by a number of organizations and departments at UC San Diego, including the LGBT Resource Center, the Student Health Service, Student Health Advocates, Associated Students (AS), the LGBT Staff & Faculty Association, the AIDS Research Institute, the Visual Arts Department, the department of Theatre and Dance, the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center (HNRC), the Anti Viral Research Center (AVRC), Environment, Health and Safety, University Centers, Face AIDS, Housing*Dining*Hospitality, Counseling and Psychological Services, the UC San Diego Bookstore, Equal Opportunity/Staff Affirmative Action, the UCSD Libraries, the Women's Center, the Cross-Cultural Center and many committed individuals throughout the University community.
