ALL SENATE FACULTY MEMBERS

SUBJECT:    UC Online Education – Wave II - Request for Letters of Intent (Internal Deadline: January 10, 2012)

Dear Colleagues:

UC Office of the President has announced Wave II of the Online Education Project. Please see the announcement letter below. This planning phase includes an invitation to Academic Senate faculty to submit brief letters of intent for online courses. Undergraduate, high enrollment, lower-division classes are the only target. The letter along with additional information regarding guidelines for submission and selection criteria can be found on our Academic Affairs website at:

http://academicaffairs.ucsd.edu/newsdocs/uconline-instruction-wave-ii.html Letters of intent must be sent to UCOP no later than January 16, 2011. Since an endorsement from the EVC is required (listed as Provost in the UCOP documents), my office will need to see your proposals in advance. Please send proposals to Associate Vice Chancellor - Undergraduate Education Barbara Sawrey (AVCUE@ucsd.edu) no later than January 10, 2012.

Please note that there are two informational webinar sessions scheduled. Interested faculty are encouraged to participate on either December 1 or 2. Details are in the attached memo.

We hope that UC San Diego will be well represented in submission of letters of intent. Should you have any questions after reviewing the documents, please feel free to consult with Associate Vice Chancellor Sawrey on academic issues and ACMS Director Jeff Henry (pjhenry@ucsd.edu) regarding any technical concerns.

EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLORS

Colleagues,

Attached please find an announcement inviting Letters of Intent (LoI) from UC campuses interested in participating in the second wave of course development that is being conducted as part of the UC Online Project. Please circulate this email widely. It will be circulated by project staff today to campus leaders and other groups that we have worked closely with in the past months and which are listed below.

Wave I, initiated in October 2010, focused on assessing the effectiveness of online instruction and was driven by the subject matter faculty proposed.

Wave II prioritizes high demand, lower-division classes and key major gateway courses. It seeks proposals from departments and ladder faculty that:

(a) align with these institutional priorities,
(b) provide dynamic, academically rigorous courses that capitalize on the unique benefits offered by online instruction, and
(c) can be offered to non-UC students on a revenue-generating basis
that benefits faculty and departments participating in the project.

Faculty selected in Wave II will work as part of the project team developing up to 20 fully-online lower-division courses that will be delivered to UC and non-UC students from a common learning environment. It is anticipated that courses will become available for instruction during the 2012-2013 academic year, and will be offered annually to both UC and non-UC students on a repeatable and predictable basis. The exclusive focus of Wave II is on high-enrollment, major gateway courses and lower-division breadth or elective courses.

LoI should be prepared using the template provided in Appendix A (attached) and submitted to uconline@ucop.edu by 12:00 p.m. (noon, Pacific Time) on January 16, 2012.

Project staff will hold two online information sessions to answer questions about the online project, the call for LoI, and the application submissions process. The webinars are scheduled for:

Thursday, December 1, 2011 from 12:00 P.M. – 1:00 P.M.
Friday, December 2, 2011 from 2:00 P.M. – 3:00 P.M.

The webinars will be conducted via Adobe Connect
(http://uc-d.adobeconnect.com/oipp) and audio is available via ReadyTalk
(dial 1-866-740-1260, access: 9879311). This invitation has been sent to:
