Appointment of Director - Environment, Health & Safety

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Garry Mac Pherson as the new Director for Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) effective March 1, 2011. Garry has over thirty years of experience in the environmental, fire, emergency and life safety fields. In August 2009 he was hired as UCSD's Fire and Life Safety Director, and in April 2010 he willingly took on the added assignment of serving as EH&S' Interim Director. Previous to his coming to UCSD he served as Poway's Fire Division Chief, having started his career there as a firefighter/paramedic and continually gaining management experience and technical expertise as he served in progressively responsible positions.

Garry's regional experience and networking with local civic leaders and representatives in emergency services make him a valued member of our team. Due to his broad based experience in matters of governance, he is often consulted by these same leaders, in an advisory capacity. That was the case most recently when he consulted with San Diego City's Fire Administration. Garry has a solid track record of working collaboratively with the campus community to keep UCSD safe.

As Director, Garry will be responsible for the leadership of EH&S and the administration of the Risk Management and Worker's Compensation programs. He will also continue to ensure that University operations are in compliance with applicable codes and regulations relating to the environment, health and safety of faculty, staff, students and public. Other programs that he is responsible for include: Accident Prevention, Animal Care, Asbestos Management, Biosafety, Environment Compliance, Environment Health, Fire and Life Safety, Hazardous Waste Management, Industrial Hygiene, Laboratory Safety, Laser Safety, Pest Management, Radiation Safety, Safety Engineering and Physical Hazard Control, Safety Training and Publications.
