ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UCSD

SUBJECT:    April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April has been designated as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. Each year the National Sexual Violence Resource Center selects a theme for SAAM and this year’s theme is, “It’s time…to get involved.” If you want to take a stand against violence and find out how to get involved in prevention efforts on campus, visit: http://sarc.ucsd.edu

Some of the main events at UC San Diego during SAAM include:

* April 5: National Day of Action – Students can participate in events at any of the colleges.

* April 21: Denim Day of Awareness – UC San Diego community members are encouraged to wear denim as a visible sign in support of ending sexual assault. Join us at the Cross-Cultural Center from 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. to learn more about sexual assault and campus resources.

* April 28: Take Back The Night – 7:00 p.m., Price Center Plaza

Because sexual assault is an issue that impacts our entire community, the UC San Diego Sexual Assault Resource Center and Women’s Center established the first UC San Diego Sexual Assault Awareness Month Planning Committee in 2010. This year marks the second year of the SAAM Committee and the Committee has developed a month-long series of programs to raise awareness about sexual assault. To learn more about the programs listed above and other SAAM events happening this month, please visit: http://women.ucsd.edu/ or http://sarc.ucsd.edu

In recognition of SAAM, one hour of administrative leave with pay has been approved that employees may apply to their attendance at a Sexual Assault Awareness Month event. Supervisors may allow one hour of administrative leave with pay for staff to participate during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, so long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.

Sexual violence impacts our entire community. We invite you to learn more about the effects of sexual violence, the resources available to address this issue, and our efforts to end sexual violence at UC San Diego. For more information, please visit http://sarc.ucsd.edu

Sexual Assault Awareness Month events are co-sponsored by a number of organizations and departments at UC San Diego including: the Sexual Assault Resource Center, Women’s Center, A.S. Women’s Commission, LGBT Resource Center, Cross-Cultural Center, Critical Gender Studies Program, Student Promoted Access Center for Education and Services, Student Health Service, Student Health Advocates, Student Legal Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women, The Council of Coordinators of Student Activities, Office of the Vice Chancellor - Student Affairs.
