CGI U builds on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings together world leaders to take action on global challenges. President Clinton launched CGI U in 2007 to engage college students in creating and implementing Commitments to Action across five Global Challenge Areas: Education, Environment and Climate Change, Peace and Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health.

The three-day CGI U meeting at UC San Diego will be attended by 1,200 students, including 200 UCSD students and students from across the nation and over 50 countries.
