April 21, 2011

MEMBERS, SAN DIEGO DIVISION, ACADEMIC SENATE
MEMBERS OF THE REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY

SUBJECT:    Notice of Meeting - April 26, 2011 Representative Assembly

Dear Colleagues:

Our fifth meeting of the 2010 - 2011 academic year is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m., in The Forum, 4th Floor, Price Center East (PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN MEETING ROOM). The Notice of Meeting (agenda) and all pertinent documents may be found on the Senate's Web page at:
http://senate.ucsd.edu/assembly/agenda/current.htm

SPECIAL DISCUSSION TOPIC: BUDGET REDUCTIONS. To better inform the faculty about the size and impact of budget cuts to the University, and to engage the faculty in plans to address the cuts at UCSD, Council is planning special presentations at this meeting of the Representative Assembly. We are encouraging all interested faculty to attend.

Senate representatives have been participating in budget planning meetings with the Administration, and the Senate has posed a series of questions to the Administration about the current budget situation and plans to deal with reductions. The Administration provided answers, and this will be the starting point for the discussion at the meeting. Also, the Senate Task Force on Budget Transparency has continued to work and will provide an update at the meeting.

Under regular business, the Assembly will have the pleasure of confirming the recipients of the 2010-11 Distinguished Teaching Awards and the 2010-11 Faculty Research Lecturer Awards. Under New Business, the Assembly will consider a resolution regarding the limiting of smoking on campus.

For help in reaching the Web site or to obtain a paper copy of the Notice of Meeting, please contact the Academic Senate Office at 858-534-3640. If at all times you prefer to receive a paper copy of the Notice of Meeting, let us know, and we'll put you on our mailing list.

If you cannot attend next week's meeting, please be sure to notify your alternate to do so in your stead. Your participation matters and we have the regular Representative Assembly business, in addition to the budget discussions with the faculty at large. I look forward to seeing you on the 26th.

Sincerely yours,

Frank L. Powell, Chair
Academic Senate, San Diego Division
