SUBJECT:    Honoring Women in Science: Maria Goeppert Mayer Stamp Celebration

Please join me for a special reception to honor UC San Diego’s legacy of female leaders and to celebrate a new stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service featuring UC San Diego Nobel laureate Maria Goeppert Mayer. The celebration, hosted by the Division of Physical Sciences, will take place in the Natural Sciences Building at 3 p.m. on July 6.

UC San Diego was the first institution to offer Mayer a regular faculty position in 1960, during a time when few researchers were women. As one of UC San Diego’s founding faculty members, she went on to become one of only two women to receive the Nobel Prize in physics; the other was Marie Curie. The university is now home to Mayer’s papers, which were donated to UC San Diego’s Mandeville Special Collections Library after her death in 1972.

We are proud to recognize the legacy and achievements of Maria Goeppert Mayer and also the many pioneering women who continue to blaze trails in a wide range of fields at UC San Diego. For more information about the reception and to RSVP, email physcievents@ucsd.edu.
