SUBJECT:    Faculty Training Pilot Program - Remote and Distance
Instruction

UC San Diego Academic Senate's Committee on Educational Policy (CEP) has approved a new Policy on Remote and Distance Instruction:

We are pleased to announce that UCSD Extension has graciously offered a limited number of seats for a faculty training pilot program for faculty members who are motivated to increase their teaching aptitude and improve student achievement by taking advantage of the online environment. The program will consist of two 2-hour in-person training sessions, four 1-hour webinars, and a program evaluation. Participation is required for all sessions. In-person sessions are scheduled for Thursday 9/29/11 and Thursday 12/15/11 from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.

Each participant will be enrolled in an online Blackboard course that will house materials covered in each session. Ongoing discussion and practice areas will be provided and facilitated throughout the program within the online course.

Please reply to avcue@ucsd.edu by Friday 9/09/11 with the following to indicate your interest in being considered as a participant:

Those selected will be notified by Monday 9/19/11.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

Thursday 9/29/11
3:30pm-5:30pm
A face-to face two hour kick-off session: Welcome and introductions. What are online courses? Why do you want to teach online? What is a learning management system (Blackboard)? At this session each participating faculty member will receive access to a practice course shell in Blackboard and a syllabus for the training program. This is a hand's on lab with "high touch" input from instructional designers. Session includes a sampling of successful online courses and a tour of Blackboard.

Face-to face two hour session: Q and A - Graduation! Faculty receives access to their course shell. Faculty provide feedback/evaluation of training program (online).
