STUDENT AFFAIRS September 27, 2011
Recently there have been incidents on the UCSD campus involving students possessing replica or toy guns and in some cases, pointing them in a threatening manner at campus law enforcement personnel. This extremely dangerous behavior threatens the health and safety of the UCSD community and is of the highest level of concern for the overall safety and well-being of our campus community. Student possession of firearms (authentic or replica), other dangerous weapons, and/or threatening others with these weapons, is in violation of the UCSD Student Conduct Code and grounds for suspension or dismissal from the University. Additionally, such behavior, on or off-campus, may result in criminal prosecution under Section 417.4 of the California Penal Code. Law enforcement personnel, including local and campus police , have been trained to respond defensively, with deadly force if deemed necessary, when they are confronted by what they perceive to be a firearm or dangerous weapon, regardless if it is a authentic or replica. In a post- Virginia Tech, climate, the University has taken significant steps to ensure the safety of all of its members. Such behavior will be dealt with to the fullest extent possible by University policies and local, state, and federal laws.
