ACADEMIC AFFAIRS September 6, 2011
ALL SENATE FACULTY
Dear Colleagues: We write to invite your participation in the 6th annual Welcome Week Convocation (http://welcomeweek.ucsd.edu/?go=details&id=454) for new undergraduate students from 5:00 p.m.to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 20 on RIMAC Field. This important milestone serves as the inaugural academic event for our new freshmen and transfer students. The 50-minute ceremony will feature brief remarks by Associated Students President Alyssa Wing, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, Executive Vice Chancellor Suresh Subramani, Vice Chancellor Penny Rue, and a keynote address by distinguished alumnus, Timothy J. Roemer '79. Tim Roemer has dedicated his professional career to strengthening national security, and improving education. As congressman from Indiana, Roemer was recognized for his successful leadership on legislation that helped improve America's competitiveness by balancing the federal budget, reforming elementary and secondary public education, and improving the affordability of higher education. Most recently, he served as the U.S. ambassador to India. Following the Ceremony, faculty and students will share dinner on the field, providing a valuable and informal venue for students to interact with faculty. Robust faculty participation is essential in order to demonstrate to our students the value we place in this first step on their academic journey. Signage will direct students to designated divisional and departmental areas where they can meet with faculty members from disciplines of interest to them. A strong faculty showing will send a message to our students about our commitment to their education and our common academic mission. It is estimated that over 4,200 students and faculty attended last year's event. To encourage participation and to create a gathering point for faculty and administrators participating in Convocation, the UC San Diego Alumni Association in collaboration with my office is hosting a pre-Convocation reception for all participating faculty at the RIMAC Annex. Faculty participants will be provided with more information regarding the reception as well as instructions as to where and when to assemble as the event date approaches. Note that academic regalia will not be required. Please rsvp with your attendance plans to Gillian Hemingway (gchemingway@ucsd.edu or x40099) by Wednesday, September 14th. We appreciate your support of this important event for our new undergraduates.
