RESEARCH
OFFICE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR - March 1, 2012
Animal care per diem rates have not increased at UCSD since 1996. These rates remain below UC average and are among the lowest of peer institutions: https://animalhealth.ucsd.edu/docs/per-diem-rate-comparison-2012.pdf The Office of Research Affairs, Health Sciences, Academic Affairs, the Animal Care Program, and the Animal Program Oversight Committee have been working on per diem rate analyses covering the past several years. Our current animal per diem rates no longer cover the cost of care of research animals. Consequently, ACP per diem rates must be increased according to a new rate schedule: https://animalhealth.ucsd.edu/docs/acp-rate-schedule-2012.pdf The new rates are effective March 15, 2012. All contract and grant applications submitted on or after that date must utilize the new per diem rates in calculating animal budgets, and will be charged at the new rate upon funding. So as not to disadvantage current grants, ACP will assist in covering the difference between the current rates and the new rates until June 30, 2014. We will be closely monitoring grants to ensure the accuracy of charges. Please contact us if you have any questions.
