Following consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrative officials, we are pleased to announce the establishment of the Center for Investigations of Health and Education Disparities as an Organized Research Unit reporting to Vice Chancellor Sandra Brown. Antonio DeMaio, Professor of Surgery and Ross Frank, Associate Professor and Chair of Ethnic Studies, will serve as founding co-Directors. The mission of CIHED is to promote and support research for a new understanding of the cultural, environmental, physical, behavioral, and biological causes that contribute to health and education disparities in America. These investigations are likely to result in practical interventions that will allow us to reduce the health and education gaps between ethnic and socioeconomic groups in the United States. In addition, these initiatives will allow us to directly participate in educational and health-related programs within the San Diego area as part of an outreach effort to involve UC San Diego with our surrounding community. A major objective of CIHED is to interact and collaborate with a variety of existing initiatives within UC San Diego that are interested in health and education disparities while allowing these programs to maintain their specific identities. In this regard, CIHED will partner with a variety of programs at UCSD, encouraging and facilitating the sharing of knowledge and resources to maximize outcomes. Membership in the Center is open to all interested faculty members and research scientists/scholars. Additional information is available at http://cihed.ucsd.edu. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Professors DeMaio (ademaio@ucsd.edu) or Frank (rfrank@ucsd.edu).
