Reappointment of Barbara Sawrey as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of Undergraduate Education

I am pleased to announce that, subsequent to a highly successful fifth-year review, I have reappointed Barbara Sawrey as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of Undergraduate Education. During the course of the review, the committee noted that the scope of Barbara’s responsibilities has grown since she was first appointed as Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education. After considering what title would most accurately reflect the nature of the position, and in consultation with campus leadership, I have decided to change the title to Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of Undergraduate Education, effective immediately.

Barbara has provided outstanding leadership to the campus, promoting the highest standards of excellence in undergraduate education at UC San Diego. Under her leadership, the campus underwent a very successful reaccreditation and effectiveness review by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Barbara was also instrumental in establishing the Undergraduate Academic Advising Council, which meets monthly to coordinate student advising in the colleges, departments, and programs. In addition, she played an integral role in establishing the Classroom Advisory Committee, which brings together Facilities Management, the Registrar’s Office, Institutional Research, Academic Computing and Media Services, a departmental management services officer, Academic Affairs staff, student representatives, and a faculty representative to address physical issues in campus classrooms. Her leadership role in our campus Enrollment Planning efforts, her work with the College Provosts in support of the Undergraduate Colleges, and her role as consultant to the Academic Senate Undergraduate Council have also been invaluable.

I am delighted that the campus will continue to benefit from Barbara’s outstanding leadership. I appreciate the review committee’s thorough work and its insightful suggestions for continuing to move the Office of Undergraduate Education forward.
