ELEANOR ROOSEVELT COLLEGE October 16, 2013
MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE SAN DIEGO DIVISION
I am writing to encourage faculty proposals for the ERC Global Service & Research (GSR) sequence and its Break Away Global Seminar (BAGS) in AY 2014-15. GSR combines academic expertise with the experiential learning of on-site service (BAGS) which is implemented over spring break. Most recently, ERC has offered environmental programs in Belize and Puerto Rico and disability-focused programs in Istanbul, Turkey. ERC welcomes proposals for both international and domestic programs. ERC professional staff will assist faculty with recruitment, logistics, and the on-site experience. In fall 2014 UC San Diego undergraduate students will apply and 12-to 15 will be selected. These students will enroll in a 2-credit preparatory seminar taught by the faculty in winter 2015 which prepares them for the on-site service (either domestic or international) which is conducted over spring break 2015. In spring term, faculty will teach a 2-credit research seminar in which students develop a research project, drawing on the preparatory seminar and on-site experience. Faculty must teach both seminars and develop the on-site service component. Eligible faculty will receive a $2500 research payment ($1000 for each course and $500 for the on-site service; not as salary, but as funding available to support various academic expenses including research, travel, and supplies). In addition, faculty airfare, lodging, and per diem will be covered. Proposals should be submitted by December 3, 2013 to the Eleanor Roosevelt College Provost’s Office. Email proposals to ERC Operations Specialist Burcu Tanyeri (btanyeri@ucsd.edu). For questions contact Teaching Professor Matthew Herbst (x24859; mtherbst@ucsd.edu) or ERC Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Pedro Scotto (x41544; pescott@ucsd.edu).
