SUBJECT:    Assistant Vice Chancellor/Campus Architect

I am very pleased to announce that Wm. Joel King, AIA, has been promoted to Assistant Vice Chancellor/Campus Architect for Facilities Design and Construction following a national search. Joel has the experience required to manage a successful transition of the campus' capital improvement program emerging within the campus strategic planning process. As the Campus Architect for Facilities Design and Construction Joel will provide leadership and direction for the delivery of $1.8 billion in capital improvements.

Joel joined UC San Diego in 2008 as a Principal Architect, and most recently served as Acting Assistant Vice Chancellor for Facilities Design and Construction. He has also held positions of Director of Architectural Services and Senior Director of Campus Project Management. He has been a leader on various capital projects over the past several years including the Charles Keeling Apartments, North Campus Housing East and West Villages, Rady School of Management Phase 2, University House, Telemedicine Building, Health Science Research Facility 2, Altman Clinical Research Translational Institute, the Jacobs Medical Center, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Point Loma pier renovation.

Future efforts include coordination of a number of transportation projects including bringing Light Rail Transit to the campus, as well as other significant regional transportation enhancements that will support sustainability and alternative transportation modes. Joel has and will continue to play a vital role on maximizing these benefits to our community.

Joel's background in design and construction is broad. He interned with the San Diego architectural firm of Hallenbeck Chamorro & Associates where he obtained his architecture license and ultimately became principal-in-charge. He started his own architecture practice in 1994 that specialized in waterfront development on Port of San Diego Tidelands of San Diego Bay. Before joining UC San Diego, he worked in the capacity of Director of Construction Services for the Catholic Diocese of San Diego for over 14 years where he oversaw the design and construction of a very diverse institutional capital building program. Joel has a B.A. degree from San Diego State University in Industrial Arts, is a member of the American Institute of Architects, and is a LEED accredited professional with the US Green Building Council.

Please join me in congratulating Joel.
