STUDENT AFFAIRS December 19, 2013
The Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs office is sad to announce the loss of A.W. Russ, former Associate Vice Chancellor- Student Affairs, who passed away on December 7, 2013 at the age of 79. A. W. began his University of California career in 1959 at UCLA. In 1970, he joined UCSD as Assistant to the Provost of Third College (now Thurgood Marshall College), five months prior to the actual enrollment of the first Third College students. As a senior administrative staff member in Third College, A. W. played a critical role in the opening and development of Third College. In 1981, he transferred to Student Affairs and was central to the achievements of Student Affairs for more than two decades. Although his work benefited the campus in many ways, he was particularly instrumental in the development of numerous sports and recreation facilities at UCSD including RIMAC. A. W. officially retired from the University of California in December 1994, however he continued in his capacity as Associate Vice Chancellor on an annual reappointment basis for several years thereafter in order to continue momentum toward a number of strategic goals for Student Affairs. His effectiveness as a university administrator was consistently punctuated with his unique insight and wisdom. We are fortunate that our campus has benefited from his leadership and he will be missed by our campus community. He is survived by his wife Josephine, his daughters Tracey Atkins of Cerritos, Uvette Russ of Long Beach and granddaughters Bria Russ and Kayla Cannon. A Celebration of his Life will be held at the Green Room in RIMAC this Friday, December 20, 2013 at 11:00am and all are welcome. Guest parking is available at the Hopkins Parking Structure and parking permits may be purchased from dispensing machines near the elevators at each level.
