OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR

April 11, 2013

ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    Triton 5K: Race for the Future

On behalf of the 2013 Triton 5K co-chairs, Darcy Bingham, Reed Vickerman and Annamarie Bezzerides, I invite you to join the university community in supporting student scholarships at the 17th annual Triton 5K: Race for the Future, formerly Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars, on Saturday, June 8.

This year, the race will be held during the fifth annual Alumni Weekend, June 6-9, and will feature a reimagined course and festival. The Triton 5K will begin at 9 a.m. at North Point Lane, next to the Track & Field Stadium, and will continue on a scenic 3.1 mile course through the UC San Diego campus. For the first time, Triton 5K will be sanctioned by USA Track and Field.

Established in 1996, the annual run/walk event is a long-standing campus tradition that has raised more than $3 million, benefiting more than 900 motivated and ambitious students with scholarship support. All proceeds from the 2013 Triton 5K will fund student scholarships.

This year, a new Kids Fun Run features a 100-meter dash with King Triton, and a Triton Treasure Hunt. Following the race, there will also be live music, a healthy living fair and a Runners Market.

Event organizers are seeking volunteers to help with the event. Volunteers will receive a free “Race Crew” t-shirt and community service hours. Please email info@sandyfeetevents.com or visit the volunteer page on the Triton 5K website if you would like to help.

For complete information about the Triton 5K, including sponsorship opportunities and to register as an individual or a team, visit 5k.ucsd.edu. Please call (858) 534-3900 with requests for alternative accessibility arrangements or accommodations.

Thank you for joining me and the entire campus community in supporting our students. I look forward to seeing you on June 8.
