ALL ACADEMICS AT UC SAN DIEGO POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS

SUBJECT:    Call for Nominations for the Chancellor's Excellence in Postdoctoral Scholar Mentoring Award and Postdoctoral Scholar Award

I am pleased to announce the call for nominees for the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral Scholar Mentoring and the inaugural Chancellor's Postdoctoral Scholar Award.

Each year, these awards are given in recognition of the outstanding postdoctoral scholars and mentors who contribute to making UC San Diego one of the best research institutions in the nation. UC San Diego Postdoctoral Scholars are individuals who have recently completed a doctoral degree and, under the oversight of a faculty mentor, continue research training in preparation for a career in academe, industry, government, or the nonprofit sector.

Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral Scholar Mentoring

Faculty mentors who provide guidance, support and inspiration to research and career excellence are essential to the success of the postdoctoral scholar. This award honors and encourages faculty mentors who serve as effective advisors, advocates, role models, and colleagues who consistently promote and actively engage in the many forms of mentorship. This award will provide the principal nominating postdoctoral scholar with $500 to support attendance at a professional association or society meeting that relates to his/her research interest or to enroll in a course that will advance his/her career development. The faculty mentor will receive $1000 to support mentorship for his/her research group, an engraved plaque and congratulatory letter from Chancellor Khosla. In addition, the research group will receive a celebratory lunch (up to $200). A total of two awards will be given.

Chancellor's Postdoctoral Scholar Award

This award recognizes postdoctoral scholars who exemplify UC San Diego's research mission -- to strive for and advance the frontiers of research, provide leadership and mentorship to the next generation, and participate in their professional development through service, training and scholarship. The award will provide $1000, an engraved plaque and congratulatory letter from Chancellor Khosla. A total of four awards will be given.

All awardees will be honored at the Annual Postdoctoral Scholar Appreciation Luncheon and Award Reception on Friday, September 13, 2013 and on a perpetual plaque that will reside in the Office of Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Affairs.
