SUBJECT:    All Campus Alert - Traffic Signals in Test Phase

The five new traffic signals recently installed on campus are now in operation and are currently in a test phase. These signals were installed as part of the SuperLoop Transit Project, a service developed in partnership with the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS). The SuperLoop provides fast and efficient bus service between North University City and UC San Diego. This is the first in a series of alternative transportation projects that will serve UC San Diego in the near future and support the campus' commitment to sustainability.

The purpose of the new signals is to provide smoother traffic flow for vehicles and bicyclists on campus, as well as to enhance the safety of pedestrians who cross at the signalized intersections. The signals will be synchronized for traffic flow and will have "transit signal priority" equipment to provide early or extended green lights to help SuperLoop vehicles maintain service schedules and reliability.

The traffic signal test phase includes:

* Synchronizing the traffic signals to ensure smooth traffic flow
* Determining appropriate signage along the route to enhance the
safety of all vehicle drivers, bike riders and pedestrians
* Refining Library Walk signage and signals to more clearly
indicate that it is a key pedestrian intersection and extra caution
should be exercised

Please note: although the lights are in a test phase, all signals are operational and traffic laws must be obeyed.

When at an intersection with a flashing red signal, vehicles and bicycles must stop. After stopping, proceed when it is safe. Observe the right-of-way rules. Bicycle riders have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists and are subject to the same rules and regulations. Pedestrians also must obey all traffic laws and use crosswalks at the new signalized intersections.

Crossing against pedestrian control signals, or crossing the street between controlled intersections (jaywalking), is a violation of the California Vehicle Code and will be enforced.

Four of the new traffic signals, including the flashing red signal, are located on Gilman Drive, one traffic signal is located on Voigt Drive on the East Campus.
