ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF, AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT:    ALL CAMPUS ALERT - TRAFFIC SIGNALS TO BECOME OPERATIONAL

Construction of SANDAG's "SuperLoop" project is almost complete at UC San Diego. The circular rapid bus system is operated by Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and provides fast and efficient bus service between North University City and UC San Diego. This is the first in a series of exciting alternative transportation projects that will serve UC San Diego in the near future and support the campus' commitment to sustainability. Funding is provided solely by MTS.

The SuperLoop project includes two new sets of bus shelters on Voigt Drive and Medical Center Drive East, to be followed with shelters on Gilman Drive through a second phase of improvements. The five new traffic signals will become operational in early September, with four located on Gilman Drive between Osler Lane and Villa La Jolla Drive, and one on Voigt Drive on the East Campus. The traffic signals have been constructed to allow the timely circulation of the SuperLoop rapid bus system, improve traffic flow, and improve pedestrian safety on campus.

The safety of students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors is our priority. Please be aware that crossing the street between signalized intersections ("jaywalking") is a violation of Vehicle Code (VC) Section 21955. The crosswalks at the new signalized intersections will now be regulated by pedestrian control signals. Crossing the roadway in the direction of a flashing or steady "DONT WALK" signal is also a violation of Vehicle Code Section 21456(b). UC San Diego police officers will be enforcing these codes and issuing warning tickets initially in an effort to educate pedestrians. As always, drivers should adhere to the posted speed limit and remain alert for bicycle and pedestrian traffic in the area. Bicyclists must also follow all applicable laws, including those related to signalized intersections.
