OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR - January 7, 2014
ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAND DIEGO
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Carol Padden as Interim Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, effective January 6, 2014. Dr. Padden has been a member of the UC San Diego faculty in the Department of Communication since 1983, is an affiliate member of the Center for Research in Language, and a doctoral graduate of the Linguistics Department at UC San Diego. She has served as Associate Dean and Faculty Equity Advisor in the Division of Social Sciences since 2008. Dr. Padden's main areas of research are sign language structure, culture and community and evolution of language. In 2010, Dr. Padden was named a MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and holds the Sanford I. Berman Chair in Language and Human Communication in the Division of Social Sciences. Dr. Padden has made significant contributions to promoting diversity and inclusion at UC San Diego both in her scholarship and administrative duties. She plays a central role in promoting research on sign languages around the world and in shaping policy and practices that will promote the full participation of deaf people in their communities. She also plays a central role in the University's efforts to promote diversity in her role as Associate Dean and Faculty Equity Advisor in the Division of Social Sciences. In partnership with campus and community stakeholders, Dr. Padden will continue the important work begun by former Vice Chancellor Linda S. Greene. In particular, Dr. Padden will work to further develop and lead the implementation of a diversity strategic plan for UC San Diego that embraces equity, diversity and inclusion as core campus values and to ensure continued strong leadership in our efforts to create a more welcoming, diverse and inclusive UC San Diego community. Immediate attention will be given to finalizing key recruitments for the EDI team. Additionally, Dr. Padden will oversee the ongoing development of the new Raza Resource Centro, an important support mechanism that will enhance the campus experience for diverse students, work closely with Student Affairs on yield activities during the Spring quarter, and continue the assessment of diversity-related activities across the university to identify and leverage opportunities for recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty and staff at UC San Diego. We are deeply appreciative that Dr. Padden has agreed to serve as Interim Vice Chancellor, and we thank her for helping to ensure smooth transition of EDI leadership. A national search for the next Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will be launched soon.
