ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO (excluding UCSD Health System)

SUBJECT:    Assistant Vice Chancellor, Chief Human Resource Officer Retirement

After 24 years of distinguished service at UC San Diego including more than eight years as Assistant Vice Chancellor, Chief Human Resource Officer, Tom Leet will be retiring effective March 1, 2015 and his last day of work will be December 19, 2014. Under Tom's leadership, Human Resources developed an array of innovative and customer focused services including the HireOnLine Applicant Management System, the establishment and expansion of the in-house Temporary Employment Service, the creation of the UC San Diego Management Forum, and the establishment of an Executive Recruitment Service that is saving the campus more than one million dollars annually compared to the use of outside search firms. The Executive Recruitment Service serves other UC campuses, saving them substantial costs and generating revenue for UC San Diego. Tom oversaw the blending of the Retirement Association and the Emeriti Association under the umbrella of a newly created Retirement Resource Center. UC San Diego's Retirement Association has the largest membership of any campus in the UC System. He chaired the committee and wrote the proposal that resulted in UC San Diego receiving funding from the Office of the President for the Health Care Facilitator Program, which continues to provide support and assistance to thousands of UC San Diego faculty, staff, and retirees.

Tom has been an ardent supporter of diversity and civility, having received two "Community Champion" awards for his efforts on campus. UC San Diego has been honored with numerous awards for its staff recruiting outreach efforts in the greater San Diego community. Tom was one of seven UC system staff and faculty who wrote the position paper that led to the establishment of Principles of Community at each UC campus.

Tom has served as Vice Chair of the UC Retirement System Advisory Board at the Office of the President, Chair of the UC Chief Human Resource Officers, and Advisor to the Retirement Administration Service Center, to name a few. He has ensured that UC San Diego's interests have been strongly represented as the campus steering committee representative to the UCPATH project. The 2014 Spring edition of "The Higher Education Workplace" (the official journal for Higher Education Human Resource Professionals) highlighted many of the innovations developed under Tom in its cover story about UC San Diego, "HR as Entrepreneur." We wish to thank Tom for his dedicated service and will be ever mindful of his many contributions to UC San Diego.

A national search to fill his position will be conducted.

Chief of Staff to the Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer Cathy Ledford has graciously agreed to serve in the capacity of Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor, Chief Human Resource Officer until a permanent replacement is identified.
