SUBJECT:    Bicycle Improvements on Gilman Drive

Starting the week of March 17, new bicycle friendly features will be implemented on Gilman Drive, between Villa La Jolla Drive and Osler Lane/Scholars Drive South.

1) Shared lane markings, known as “sharrows,” will be painted on the pavement to alert drivers to the possible presence of bike riders and indicates that people on bikes have the right to use the vehicle travel lane. See a sharrow infographic here:

2) The new traffic signals that have been installed by SANDAG include bicycle friendly sensors in the pavement, called loop detectors, which allow a bicycle rider to trigger a green light. New pavement markings will help indicate where these detectors are and where a cyclist should position their bicycle to trigger the traffic signal.

In the interest of safety, we strongly encourage all drivers and bicycle riders to learn how to use these new features. Brief videos on how to use them are available for viewing here:

Relatively few traffic impacts are anticipated as most of the work will occur at night.

These are the first in a series of bicycle friendly projects planned for the campus, including new dedicated bike routes. We welcome any questions you may have regarding these new features.
