March 12, 2014
I invite you to join the UC San Diego community in supporting student scholarships by participating in the 18th annual 2014 Triton 5K on Saturday, June 7. Registration for this annual event, held during the sixth annual Alumni Weekend June 5 through 8, opens today. Participants may run or walk the 3.1 mile scenic course through campus—past the King Triton statue, the world-famous Geisel Library and many of the renowned public artworks from the Stuart Collection, including Niki de Saint Phalle’s “Sun God,” Tim Hawkinson’s 23-foot-high stone “Bear,” and Do Ho Suh’s “Fallen Star” house perched atop Jacobs Hall. Sanctioned by USA Track and Field (USATF), the 2014 Triton 5K is open to the UC San Diego campus community and the public and will feature entertainment along the course, new pricing with discounts for active military and veterans, and an enhanced Kids Fun Run and play zone. All participants who run or walk the course will receive a T-shirt and gear bag. You are encouraged to register as an individual or create a team of 5 or more. Children 12 and under who participate in the Kids Fun Run will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag. Following the race, enjoy live music, a healthy living fair and a Runners Market, among other activities. To encourage runners to participate in the race, eligible UC San Diego employees may earn points toward the UC Living Well incentive program. Established in 1996 as the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars, this long-standing campus tradition has raised more than $3.5 million, benefiting more than 1,000 ambitious students with scholarship support. With State budget cuts to the University of California, it’s more important than ever for the campus to come together to support our students. I appreciate the efforts of the 2014 Triton 5K planning committee, including tri-chairs Darcy Bingham, Reed Vickerman and Mark Stickel. We look forward to seeing you on June 7 for the 18th annual Triton 5K. For registration, more information or if you would like to volunteer for the event, visit: http://5k.ucsd.edu. Please call (858) 534-3900 with requests for alternative accessibility arrangements or accommodations.
