Appointment of Deborah Rico as Interim Controller

It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Deborah Rico as Interim Controller and Assistant Vice Chancellor – Business & Financial Services. As some of you know, our current Controller and AVC, Don Larson, will be retiring at the end of May, 2014, so Debbie’s appointment at this time will allow for an orderly transition of responsibility and authority.

Debbie is eminently qualified to fill this role for UC San Diego. She has been Associate Controller for over thirteen years, with significant responsibility for establishing an effective control environment at our campus, as well as providing leadership for delivering mission critical business processes and services to all areas of the campus. She is a graduate of San Diego State University, and a CPA. She came to UC San Diego with extensive experience in public accounting and as a controller in the private sector.

We appreciate Debbie accepting this appointment as it allows us the opportunity to complete the Vice Chancellor—Chief Financial Officer recruitment, and having that individual lead the recruitment for a permanent Controller & AVC.
