SUBJECT:    Reappointment of Larry Goldstein as Director of UC San Diego's Stem Cell Program

It is with great pleasure that I announce the reappointment of Larry Goldstein as Director of UC San Diego's Stem Cell Program, following a successful five-year review.

Director Goldstein has provided outstanding leadership to the UC San Diego Stem Cell Program, while serving at the same time as the Scientific Director of the Sanford Consortium of Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Goldstein has made important contributions to the stem cell effort in San Diego as a whole, dating back to the early days of California Proposition 71 and continuing to the present. Director Goldstein's vision and leadership have been central to the UC San Diego Stem Cell Program's extraordinary achievements and its local, national, and international prominence. Director Goldstein led the effort in bringing together the institutions on the Mesa to receive funding from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) for a joint training program, and was instrumental in bringing together Mesa collaborators to establish a Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine (SCRM) building. Under Director Goldstein's direction, the Stem Cell Program has provided the basic science foundation for stem cell therapies for translation to patient care. Director Goldstein also played a key role in raising $100 million for the establishment of the Clinical Translation Center.

I am delighted that the UC San Diego Stem Cell Program and the University will continue to benefit from University Director Goldstein's leadership. I sincerely appreciate the review committee's thoughtful and thorough review and suggestions for ensuring the Stem Cell Program's continued trajectory of excellence.

Please join me in thanking Director Goldstein for his exceptional service to the campus, both past and future.
