SUBJECT:    CONSTRUCTION ALERT - SuperLoop Gilman Transit Center Project (Revised)

Project Description/Locations:

As part of the SuperLoop project plan, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) are building a new Transit Center on the UC San Diego campus. A total of four new bus shelters will be constructed on the north and south sides of Gilman Drive between Myers Drive and Russell Lane. The new Gilman Transit Center (GTC) will include bus turnouts for efficient loading of passengers, larger waiting areas for bus riders, improved seating and lighting, and open space improvements. The project also includes a dedicated bike lane along Gilman Drive and additional bike racks near the Gilman Transit Center.

Construction is underway and will take place through September 12, 2014. Normal hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; modifications in construction activities could be conducted with campus approval.

Approved Construction Activity Modification (note activity date change from 8/29/14 Construction Alert):

Slurry seal of Gilman Drive between Myers Drive and Russell Lane will be conducted between the hours of 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM on Wednesday evening, September 10th; Thursday morning and Thursday evening, September 11th; and Friday morning, September 12, 2014.

During construction, please note the following changes and temporary bus stops:

The UC San Diego Shuttles, MTS Routes 30 and 150, SuperLoop Routes 201 and 202, and NCTD Route 101 will use bus stops on the north and south sides of Gilman Drive, west of Myers Drive.

MTS westbound Routes 41 and 921 will drop off riders on the north side of Gilman Drive, east of Russell Lane (near the Gilman Parking Structure).

MTS eastbound Routes 41 and 921 will board riders on the south side of Gilman Drive, between Russell Lane and Villa La Jolla Drive.

Beginning Tuesday, September 2nd, the new Mira Mesa Rapid Route 237 will serve the GTC on weekdays. If needed, due to ongoing construction, Route 237 will temporarily serve stops on eastbound Gilman Drive, dropping off riders west of Myers Drive, and boarding riders between Russell Lane and Villa La Jolla Drive.

Immediate Street Traffic, Bike Lane, and Pedestrian Impacts:

Traffic control measures will be in place while lanes are narrowed at construction locations. One lane will remain open in each direction at all times. Bike lanes will be impacted along Gilman Drive; pedestrians may be directed to adjacent walkways during some phases of construction.
