ACADEMIC AFFAIRS January 12, 2015
ALL ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO
It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Steve Ross to my Academic Affairs senior leadership team as Associate Vice Chancellor, Resource Administration (AVC-RA), effective February 1. As AVC-RA, Steve will serve as the chief financial and administrative officer for Academic Affairs, with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Campus VC-CFO, and will serve as a primary resource consultant for the EVC-AA reporting units, including VC EDI, VC Research, and VC Student Affairs. Additionally, Steve will be responsible for providing high level strategic direction and planning for Academic Affairs, and will be an important liaison as we work to strengthen ties with the Health Sciences and Marine Sciences in undergraduate teaching and joint research endeavors. He will also provide leadership, management oversight and/or work direction to several functional areas including the capital program, risk management, and human resource management across the EVC-AA organization. Steve's outstanding record of service to UC San Diego spans nearly three decades, with nineteen years in the Jacobs School of Engineering including twelve as Executive Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration. He has been an essential member of the Jacobs School leadership team under three deans, and has played an integral role in guiding resources for the School's continued growth and success. Among his accomplishments, Steve managed the resource planning for over 120 faculty appointments and oversaw the planning, construction and occupancy of four major academic buildings. He served as the administrative leader for the launch of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), and has continued to provide outstanding service to the Institute since its inception. Steve is well respected by Jacobs School faculty and staff for shepherding the School through a period of severe state budget cuts; finding creative solutions to minimize the impact of the cuts while ensuring continued excellence and growth of the School. He holds a Master of Business Administration from San Diego State University and Bachelor's Degrees in Arts and Economics from the University of California Davis. Steve's accomplishments, strong leadership skills, and breadth of campus experience make him exceptionally well suited to serve as my chief financial and administrative officer for Academic Affairs. Please join me in congratulating Steve on his appointment.
